Software
All of the software listed here is available for free download, mostly under the GNU license. Many of these packages
rely on each other. Please beware that they are not in order of reliance. Most new robust linux installations come
with some or all of this software pre-installed and configured, particularly
Fedora and
Ubuntu. New Windows installations
do not have any of this software installed, but binaries and installers make the process pretty easy.

Apache httpd
- the most reliable web server in the world

Open Office
- supports basically all office document formats

GIMP
- GNU Image Manipulation Program - many of the images seen in the Photos area of this website
have been enhanced using The GIMP, especially the Color Transform and the Filters. Some
knowlege of image processing is helpful but not required.

MySQL
- starting with version 5.0, tools like stored procedures, triggers and cursors are supported

ActivePerl
- the most complete instance of Perl for Windows.
The Camel
may be very helpful.

- database utility includes table/view spreadsheets and a SQL editor

- perl editor and debugger

- SOAP API for Tomcat which automatically generates WSDL from bean classes and handles the SOAP message
parsing on both the client and the server
